A 19-year-old boy has been stabbed to death and two other teenagers wounded after they were allegedly targeted by a gang demanding protection money for selling sweets at school in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal.
The attack took place on Maponya Road at N Section on Thursday afternoon outside a high school.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the victims – aged 17, 19, and the deceased, 19 – were confronted by a group of young men, leading to a fight in which the three were stabbed.
The violent confrontation was reportedly the culmination of threats that began a day earlier.
According to Netshiunda, on Wednesday, the victims were approached by the same group, who allegedly demanded an undisclosed amount of money as a protection fee because the victims were selling lollipops at school.
When the group confronted the victims again on Thursday, a fight ensued, resulting in the three teenagers being stabbed.

“A search for the suspects is under way,” Netshiunda said, adding that the motive for the altercation is yet to be established, although a teenage gang-related feud cannot be ruled out.
