Friday’s County Championship saw England stalwart Joe Root struggle with Yorkshire under the pump, Nottinghamshire’s Ben Duckett strike his third half-century in a row and Ollie Robinson score a huge 100 for Sussex.

Jack Carson and Robinson made centuries batting at numbers nine and 10 respectively as Sussex rallied from 92-7 against Surrey to 358-9 declared.

Surrey, without a County Championship win at the Oval in nearly a year, were in the driving seat after Jordan Clark’s five wickets on a green top but Fynn Hudson-Prentice (53) and Carson dug in.

Carson went on to 105 before nicking off, giving England gloveman Jamie Smith his third catch after taking on wicketkeeping duties for Surrey due to an injury Ben Foakes suffered while bowling last week.

Robinson, who put on 167 alongside Carson, has been touted for an England recall for his seam bowling and he weathered a nasty blow to his left index finger on 93 to go to exactly 100 with a hook for six.

The last time the Sussex captain made three figures was in his maiden first-class innings in 2015 and he immediately declared here before Rory Burns and Dom Sibley led Surrey to 19 without loss in reply.

Yorkshire are under the pump at Taunton, where even Joe Root could not inspire them as they were all out for 162 before Somerset closed on 201-3 thanks to Joshua Thomas’ maiden first-class ton.

Root dragged on to his stumps for 33, one of six wickets to fall to Lewis Gregory, and while Somerset lurched to 33-3, 21-year-old opener Thomas’ fluent 136 not out put them in the box seat.

Ben Slater’s mammoth 178 underpinned Nottinghamshire’s 405-4 at Leicestershire, with England opener Ben Duckett recording 77 – his third-successive 50 – before being pinned lbw by left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel.

Zain-ul-Hassan’s 131 not out and Kiran Carlson’s unbeaten 158 ushered Glamorgan to 353-1 at Hampshire, where England hopeful Asa Tribe’s loose slap to gully on 45 was the only wicket to fall.

In Division Two, Middlesex reached 272-6 against Durham at Lord’s, where England captain Ben Stokes batted in the nets and wandered around the boundary edge ahead of a likely comeback next week.

Stokes, who on Thursday announced he had been given the all-clear to return to playing following a broken cheekbone, watched on as Ben Raine claimed three wickets for the visitors.

However, Kemar Roach was withdrawn because of a hamstring injury and replaced by Luke Robinson, who had his cap presentation for his first-class debut on the boundary edge while play was ongoing.

Zak Crawley made a season’s best 44 before Daniel Bell-Drummond’s 129 helped Kent to 352 against Derbyshire, who closed on 24 without loss at Canterbury.

Gareth Roderick amassed 164 not out to lift Worcestershire to 306 at Wantage Road, where Northampton closed on 40 without loss.
