Re “Pinch Yourselves, Knicks Fans: Next Year Is Now; First Title Since 1973 Transforms a Hardened City Into a Puddle of Joy” (front page, June 15):
Why do the Knicks keep making me cry happy tears?
Any franchise that double-sweeps its way to the N.B.A. finals is sure to garner tremendous support from hometown fans. Something more has been happening in New York. One team, five men at a time, has caused a city of more than eight million people to freeze and roar in unison.
This is not just about basketball. At a time when inequality and technology have damaged New Yorkers’ sense of community, the Knicks have given us an opportunity to celebrate the common threads that still connect us.
As the countless watch parties, impossibly full bars and exuberant crowds spilling into our streets show, the city has enthusiastically seized that opportunity. All New Yorkers, from those born here to the freshest transplants, have needed this atmosphere of togetherness and belonging.
Thank you, New York Knicks. Your hard-won victories have allowed each of us to feel, if only for a moment, exactly what Frank Sinatra meant as we sing, “Start spreading the news.”

As a 10-year-old in 1976, I watched heartbroken as the Boston Celtics felled my Phoenix Suns in the Suns’ first trip to the N.B.A. finals. I quickly recovered, with the hope that there is always next year, and besides, joy and hope were everywhere in that celebratory bicentennial summer.
I’m still waiting for the Suns, but the Knicks’ joy and spirit have done much to assuage this troubled summer of the semiquincentennial. Watching them has touched my 10-year-old heart.

How does one gauge the greatness of Jalen Brunson (Villanova, class of 2018)? Well, at least for now, it seems that he has edged out Pope Leo XIV (Villanova, class of 1977) as his university’s most celebrated alum.

A Fight Spectacle That Tarnished the White House
To the Editor:
Re “For His 80th Birthday, Trump Brought a Cage Match to the White House Lawn” (news article, nytimes.com, June 14):
I never expected to see the White House reduced to what Americans witnessed on Sunday night.
The White House is supposed to be a symbol of the Republic, a place that reflects the seriousness, dignity and responsibility of self-government. Instead, it looked like a stage for spectacle and self-promotion. Millions of Americans watched behavior that would have been unthinkable from previous generations of leaders.
I am not angry because of partisan politics. I am angry because I love this country and believe that its institutions matter. Veterans, public servants and generations of Americans sacrificed to preserve the dignity of the office of the presidency. Watching that dignity discarded for applause, attention and political theater is infuriating.
America is strongest when its leaders elevate the nation. Sunday night felt like the opposite. It felt small, petty and embarrassing. The standards that once defined public service continue to erode, and too many elected officials remain silent while it happens.
History will remember moments like this. It will remember who defended our institutions and who stood by while they were diminished.
The White House belongs to the American people. It should never be treated as a prop in a spectacle that degrades the office and embarrasses the nation.
