Step aside, Superman. Almost one year after the most recent DC reboot, it’s time for Supergirl to fly onto the big screen—accompanied by her trusty canine companion, Krypto.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters today and showcases the special relationship between pets and their owners. While the average employee might not have superpowers, many can relate to wanting a furry friend around all the time, even in the office.
And many more may want to after Supergirl opens. The movie’s predecessor—2025’s Superman, which also featured Krypto—reportedly sparked an interest in pet adoption after its opening weekend.

Who actually is Supergirl and what happened on Krypton?
Like with any comic book character, there is an abundance of source material to draw from for Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. This film is the vision of both James Gunn, cochairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, and Craig Gillespie, the director.
Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, is Superman’s cousin. David Corenswet reprises his role as the Man of Steel. Their home planet of Krypton, of course, exploded due to core instability. Superman’s biological parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, sent him to Earth before the destruction.
In a big departure from earlier films and comics, audiences learned in 2025’s Superman that his parents wanted him to conquer Earth and procreate with several human women. He chooses another path.
Supergirl was also sent to Earth, but she arrived after Superman because she was able to survive on a piece of the dying planet. This meant that she slowly watched her home and the people she loved die before escaping. As a result of this trauma, she has some demons.
How are the reviews for Supergirl so far?
Supergirl might have an uphill climb to win audiences over, as reviews for the film are mixed at best.
Variety lamented that it was “so flat it’s super-horrendous.” The Los Angeles Times called it a “hot mess.” At the same time, several reviews praised Alcock’s portrayal.
Deadline’s Pete Hammond wrote that “the main attraction and secret sauce as far as I am concerned is a CGI dog named Krypto.”
Much like employees who want to bring their pets to the office, Hammond wanted more time with this furry friend.
What are the box office predictions for Supergirl?
Reviews aside, it’s expected that audiences will show up at movie theaters this weekend.
According to Deadline, Supergirl is expected to make between $80 million and $90 million at the global box office. Its biggest competition will be Toy Story 5’s second weekend in theaters. Coming off a $160 million domestic box office opening weekend, Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang are still going strong.
How does Krypto fit into all this?
Just watching the trailer tells audiences that Krypto is essential to the plot. The poor pup gets shot, and Supergirl has three days to get the antidote from the evil Krem of the Yellow Hills. Animal lovers and pet owners all know this is a high-stakes situation.
This is making me want to bring my pet to the office. Should I?
Thankfully, employees have a much less risky decision when choosing whether or not to bring a pup to work.
According to a 2019 National Institutes of Health study, employees who brought their pooch to work were more engaged, social, and less likely to leave their job. They also had better overall well-being.
The American Heart Association found that 44% of employees would contemplate getting a new job if it was in a pet-friendly office. Perhaps even more surprising is that 37% would sacrifice pay and vacation days in order to be able to bring their pet to work.
Despite the joy that pets bring, there are also downsides to them in the workplace.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 10%-20% of the world is allergic to cats and dogs. Pets can be distracting, needing bathroom breaks, water, attention, and food. There is also the risk of a pet biting someone or destroying property.
