Manyi, Makhubele and now Mokoena-Zondi: MK Party appoints new chief whip

Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, a former ANC Youth League leader, is MK Party’s new chief whip.

    • The MK Party has made another leadership position change.
    • Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, a former ANC Youth League leader, takes over as its chief whip.
    • Mokoena-Zondi replaces Colleen Makhubele, who was fired late last year.

The MK Party (MKP) has announced Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi as its latest chief whip in yet another leadership change.

Mokoena-Zondi, a former ANC Youth League leader, has served as the MKP MP in the National Council of Provinces.

She previously told the People’s Assembly blog that she left the ANC to follow former president Jacob Zuma “after everything that happened” to him before he co-founded the MK Party.

The party says it made the appointment because she had “exceeded expectations” in her capacity as caretaker chief whip.

In a statement on Friday announcing her appointment, party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said, “Her commitment, discipline and leadership have consistently advanced the organisational mandate of the MK Party.”

Ndhlela said the appointment will boost the MKP’s caucus, enhance unity of purpose, and achieve greater alignment of the collective interests of the organisation within Parliament.

“It also reflects the movement’s steadfast dedication to women’s empowerment and its commitment to expressing transformative leadership through women at the highest levels of responsibility,” Ndhlela said.

“We are confident that honourable Mokoena-Zondi’s experience and steadfast leadership will consolidate the work of our parliamentary structures and advance the programme of the movement.”

Ndhlela said party president Jacob Zuma and other leaders want the party’s MPs to support Mokoena-Zondi fully in her new role as chief whip.

She replaces Colleen Makhubele, who was fired from the position late last year.

Before Makhubele, former Gupta lieutenant Mzwanele Manyi held the job.

    But he was also fired.
