Tuesday was a fun day to be a pitcher at the 2026 College World Series. At least, that was the case for No. 3 Georgia and No. 16 West Virginia. Both teams tossed shutouts in their respective elimination games to clinch spots in the Bracket 1 and 2 championships.
For the second time in the CWS, Georgia’s arms proved overwhelming for the typically explosive bats of No. 6 Texas. Dylan Vigue struck out eight Longhorns across four innings, and Justin Byrd followed with four punchouts across five frames of relief work as the Bulldogs blanked their SEC rival in a 2-0 pitcher’s duel. Georgia allowed just one run in two games against Texas since arriving in Omaha, Neb. last weekend.
That incredible showing on the mound sets Georgia up well for its rematch with Oklahoma in the Bracket 2 championship. Because it used just two pitchers, the bullpen should be fresh enough to give the Bulldogs a shot at winning the requisite two games in two days to advance to the CWS Finals.
West Virginia was just as dominant on the bump in its do-or-die contest earlier in the day against Troy. Dawson Montesa spearheaded the effort with 5.1 innings of two-hit ball as the Mountaineers drubbed the Trojans in a 12-0 rout. The offense was equally stellar, and on a day where all but one starter recorded at least one base hit, nobody shined brighter than star catcher/second baseman Gavin Kelly. His 18th home run of the year was a three-run jack in the sixth inning that broke the game open.
The Mountaineers are set to face No. 5 North Carolina for Bracket 1 supremacy, and like Georgia, they will need to rattle off two consecutive wins to earn their way to the championship series.
