Airbnb Reminds You That Its AI-Powered ‘Anti-Party…

Ahead of the Independence Day holiday weekend, Airbnb is reminding prospective renters that “disruptive gatherings” are strictly prohibited.

Moreover, the company is emphasizing its “heightened anti-party measures,” including screening technology that’s based on machine learning and designed to anticipate which guests may be problematic.

“This is the fifth year in a row we’ve run these defenses for July 4, and last year they redirected more than 20,000 people from higher-risk bookings over the holiday weekend,” said Rog Kaiser, Airbnb’s vice president of fraud and safety operations, in a statement.

To thwart would-be partiers, Airbnb says it uses an automated algorithm to detect unsanctioned soirees by monitoring data points like a guest’s reservation, account history, the listing itself, and message thread topics.

In many cases, users flagged by Airbnb’s tech as high-risk for partying down are redirected from listings for entire home rentals to alternative accommodations such as private rooms and hotels, where throwing a big party is less feasible.

“That kind of capability—improved year over year—is what it takes to help make the holiday great for our hosts, guests, and the communities around them,” according to Kaiser.

The company has touted its party-blocking powers on several occasions in recent years, especially around holiday weekends. In addition to being a nuisance for neighbors, large gatherings at Airbnb rentals have led to violence, as happened in 2019 when five people were killed in a Halloween shooting near San Francisco. The party that sparked that tragedy had more than 100 attendees and was not authorized by the Airbnb host renting the property.

In particular, Airbnb has cracked down on what the company calls “open-invite” parties, such as those advertised at large on social media.

Airbnb also strives to avoid celebrations attended by unsupervised minors, reminding adults that people under 18 are banned from having their own Airbnb accounts and adult account holders are not allowed to book a stay for a minor unless that adult account holder will be present for the entire trip.

The penalties for violating Airbnb’s no-parties policy can result in the cancellation of the user’s account, financial liability for any property damage, and legal liability should law enforcement become involved.

Does Airbnb literally watch you during your stay?

Yes and no. The company’s AI evidently keeps your reservation under surveillance for party-stopping purposes, and then passes along that task to the host, albeit with limits.

As of 2024, Airbnb no longer allows hosts to use indoor security cameras to monitor or record guests. That’s a change from previous policy, which allowed hosts to use indoor security cameras in common areas, such as kitchens and hallways, so long as the presence of the devices was disclosed in the listing.

The change did not apply to exterior cameras and audio recording equipment, like Ring doorbell cameras, which are still permitted, except in places with a higher expectation of privacy, like outdoor showers and saunas.

So if you get a curt text message or phone call from an angry host who somehow knows you had a guest or guests over, the host probably saw your visitors enter on a doorbell camera—which Airbnb guests are not allowed to block or tamper with.

“Devices like doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors continue to be permitted on Airbnb and can be an effective, privacy-protective way for Hosts to monitor security for their home and get ahead of issues like unauthorized parties,” reads the official policy.

Interior noise decibel monitors that detect volume but don’t record audio are also permitted.

If those measures are a bit more invasive than you’d prefer—or if you’re tired of Airbnb for the myriad of other reasons the company gets under travelers’ skin—just remember: You do have alternatives.
