Walmart announced Monday it was cutting prices of beef and other products, which President Trump tried to take credit for shortly after the company announced the cuts.

Walmart did not mention him or his administration in its press release.

“I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my administration’s request to celebrate our great country’s 250th birthday,” Mr. Trump posted on social media.

Walmart’s statement was put on the company’s website before Trump’s post, which came at 4:45 p.m.

Julie Barber, the chief merchant of Walmart U.S., said in the release that the retailer had made “investments in price” for the summer season. She said the retailer will lower prices for products including produce, drinks, pools, toys, grills and summer clothing.

“Whether they’re stocking up for a backyard barbecue, heading out on vacation or simply shopping for the week ahead, we’re helping everyone save more for every occasion,” Ms. Barber said in a statement.

Some grocery store chains are weighing price cuts on select items to lure more customers. In June, executives at Kroger told investors on an earnings call that they are running price tests on certain items, hoping to convince shoppers to buy more.
