Three-time Olympic champion Adam Peaty won the 100 metres breaststroke at the Aquatic Great Britain Swimming Championships on Tuesday as he sets his sights on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Peaty’s swim of 58.97 seconds was the second-quickest time in the world this season, suggesting the 32-year-old could again be among the medals in two years’ time.

He finished ahead of world junior champion Filip Nowacki, ‌who finished second in 59.39, and Max Morgan in 59.56, but Peaty suggested there was still room for improvement.

“I didn’t think I could get that result, so that’s now the marker, that’s the baseline,” the six-time ‌Olympic medalist told reporters.

“How do we turn that into a low 57 again. For me, I’m a racer, and I just want to extract the best of myself.”

He added: “I just said to myself, ‘What have I got to lose?’ And it was nothing, so why not give everything and risk it. And it worked out.

“I’m still heavily invested in the sport. I train every single day, pretty much. I enjoy swimming, so I want as much time in the water as I can.”

It is almost a year since Peaty, who got married while swimming took a back seat, confirmed he will go again.

Peaty won the Olympic 100m breaststroke title on debut at Rio 2016 before retaining it at Tokyo 2020, in addition to claiming 4x100m mixed medley gold in Japan.

He took a break from swimming in 2023, citing mental health issues and later admitted he had been on a “self-destructive spiral”.

At the Paris 2024 Games, amid physical issues – including a positive Covid test – Peaty had to settle for 100m breaststroke silver.

He could become the oldest British swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal in 2028, when he will be 33.
