The window for Amtrak’s “Night Owl” fares is stretching perilously close to early-bird-special territory.
The period of time when the national rail carrier offers discounted fares for select departures for nighttime through early-morning travel on the East Coast now stretches from 6pm to 8am, Amtrak has announced.
When Night Owl fares debuted in 2023 the window was 7pm to 5am.
What’s more, passengers can now find the lower off-peak ticket prices for trips to all the cities with Amtrak service along its Northeast Corridor, i.e., between Boston and Washington, D.C.
Just how low are Amtrak’s Night Owl fares?
Here are some sample one-way coach fares cited by Amtrak:
- for $10: Philadelphia to Baltimore; New York City to Philadelphia; Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.
- for $15: New Haven, Conn., to Boston
- for $20: New York City to Baltimore; Boston to New York City; New York City to Washington, D.C.
- for $25: Boston to Philadelphia; New Haven to Washington, D.C.
- for $30: Washington, D.C., to Boston
The fare covers the usual coach class experience, including free Wi-Fi and power outlets at your seat as well as a generous luggage allowance of up to three bags.
Terms and conditions
In addition to being valid only for coach seats and only for departures between Washington, D.C., and Boston from the hours of 6pm and 8am, Night Owl fares are limited, Amtrak warns, and “may not be available on all trains, dates, or departures.”
Rules for changes, blackouts, refunds, and other restrictions apply, and Night Owl fares are not valid for bookings made with Amtrak Guest Rewards points.
Another consideration for passengers contemplating travel during the graveyard shift: Train stations along the way might not be open in the wee hours.
As Amtrak’s website points out, “Moynihan Train Hall [in New York City] is closed from 1am to 5am daily.” If you’re planning to depart from or arrive in Manhattan during those hours, you’ll want to direct your attention to Penn Station instead.
