Andy Farrell has signed a contract extension to remain as Ireland head coach until the end of the 2031 Rugby World Cup.
Farrell will lead Ireland into the next two Rugby World Cup cycles having overseen a period of sustained success since he took over the role in 2019.
During his time in charge, Farrell has led Ireland to two Six Nations titles, including a Grand Slam in 2023, after replacing Joe Schmidt who had taken them to No 1 in the world rankings for the first time.

“I am incredibly proud to continue this journey,” Farrell said. “It is a privilege to work with such a talented group of players and staff, and to represent the supporters whose passion and unwavering support drive this team forward and inspire us every time we take the field.
“What excites me most is the increasing strength and investment in pathways and the quality of talent coming through.
“There is a real confidence in the system that has been built across the provinces and age-grade programmes, and I believe with sustained effort that the best is yet to come.”
The 2027 Rugby World Cup had been set to mark the end of Farrell’s current contract with the IRFU, however they have put confidence in the former England international to lead the team into the 2031 tournament, which will be hosted by the USA.

Farrell led the Lions to a series win over Australia in 2025
Farrell also led the British and Irish Lions to a series win over Australia in 2025 before returning to Ireland to continue their consistent spell of success.
They lost heavily to France in the opening game of this year’s Six Nations but recovered to win their remaining four matches and collect a fourth Triple Crown in five years.
Ireland’s next outing will be against Australia in the new Nations Championship on July 4, before going on to face Japan and New Zealand later that month.
