The body of a missing 73-year-old tourist has been discovered at the Augrabies Falls National Park, in Northern Cape, following an extensive search operation.
South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed that the body was found on Thursday, after the man had gone missing two days earlier.
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw stated that a search operation was launched after the park was informed of the visitor’s disappearance.
“The South African Police Service (SAPS) was immediately alerted, and a comprehensive search operation within the park was initiated,” said Louw.
“On 18 March 2026, with authorisation from park management, the family of the missing tourist arranged an aerial and additional ground search.”

The remains of the tourist were discovered off the popular Dassie Trail and subsequently identified as 73-year-old Schalk de Witt.
Louw added that the police coordinated the recovery of the remains, which have been referred to forensic authorities for further investigation.
The cause of death remains unknown.

The matter has been handed over to SAPS for further investigation.
