Former Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe scored twice as Ivory Coast secured second-place in Group E with a comfortable 2-0 win over Curacao.

The result sent Emerse Fae’s side into the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in history and ensured the debutants finished bottom of the pile.

Les Elephants only needed a point to finish as runners-up, but they took control early on and went in front inside seven minutes when Liverpool target Yan Diomande took advantage of Curacao failing to clear their lines to square for Pepe, who slotted smartly into the bottom right corner.

It should have been 2-0 before the 20-minute mark but under pressure, Amad Diallo scuffed another Diomande cross wide.

Curacao did not lose spirit, with Jurien Gaari, Tahith Chong and Leandro Bacuna all managing shots, but a combined xG of just 0.13 illustrated the lack of definitive threat they carried.

While they trailed by just one goal, Dick Advocaat’s side possessed the more urgency of the two teams after the break – until their hopes suffered a hammer blow just after the hour, when Ibrahim Sangare set Pepe free in the box with a glorious ball.

He opened his body and coolly fired a second past Eloy Room that secured Ivory Coast’s historic progression and broke Curacao hearts.

Curacao’s first-ever World Cup campaign has come to an end

    The key moments in Philadelphia

    • 2: SHOT! Curacao’s Tahith Chong hits the game’s first shot on target. Yahia Fofana saves.
    • 7: GOAL! Ivory Coast’s Nicolas Pepe smartly tucks in the opening goal after a square ball from Yan Diomande.
    • 18: CHANCE! Diomande picks out Amad Diallo, but he scuffs wide under pressure.
    • 44: WIDE! Leandro Bacuna darts between two Ivory Coast defenders, but lashes the wrong side of the post.
    • 55: OVER! Curacao’s Sherel Floranus causes a touch of panic as his shot whistles just over the crossbar.
    • 64: GOAL! Ibrahim Sangare’s lovely ball sets up Pepe, who opens his body and curls home for 2-0.

    What the result means…

Analysis: End of the road for Curacao

    Sky Sports’ Dan Long:

The Curacao heartbreak was evident after the final whistle blew in Philadelphia. That shrill sound echoed around the stadium and signalled the end of the Blue Wave’s first-ever appearance at a World Cup.

After the goalless draw with Ecuador last time out – during which goalkeeper Eloy Room made a record 15 saves – a win against the Ivory Coast would have secured progression to the knockout stages. That that was even a possibility for the second-lowest-ranked nation at the tournament was incredible.

Dick Advocaat’s side gave it everything, but Les Elephants never really looked uncomfortable. Nicolas Pepe scored with two of their three shots on target; Curacao hit two, but Yahia Fofana was not made to work. And so their fairytale came to a conclusion.

Unlike many predicted, they did not disgrace themselves. Sure, a 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening game was far from ideal, but they scored and were level for a time. Room’s exploits in the second were a joy to behold, and in the third game, they held their own for long periods.

The sadness at the end illustrated the belief in themselves. Not disproportionate belief that they could have won the tournament, but belief that they could have continued to surprise and quieten the doubters.

But they have had a taste of the big time now – and you can be sure they will be desperate to return in four years’ time.
