Friday’s weather: Warm, thundershowers for most of SA; hot in Eastern and Northern Cape

Extremely hot conditions are expected in parts of the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.

Thundershowers and warm conditions are expected in most parts of the country, but severe thunderstorms and hot conditions are forecast for the Northern Cape, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

    Impact-based warnings

A yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding, damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, vehicles, livelihood and livestock are expected over Nama Khoi, Khai-Ma and Hantam local municipalities in the Northern Cape.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.

    Advisories

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions in places along the coast and the adjacent interior between Plettenberg Bay and KuGompo (formerly East London) in the Eastern Cape, as well as over the Richtersveld in the Northern Cape.
