The long-in-the-works Guggenheim Abu Dhabi finally has an opening date.
The Department of Culture and Tourism–Abu Dhabi announced this week that the modern and contemporary art museum will begin welcoming visitors on Friday, Dec. 11.
As The Art Newspaper points out, plans for the Guggenheim outpost were originally revealed way back in 2006.
The enormous facility, located on the city’s Saadiyat Island, was designed by famed architect Frank Gehry, who died in 2025. The building features 10 sculptural cones, nine clad in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass. Inside, 30 different galleries are connected by a central atrium.
The focus is art created from the 1960s to the present, highlighting artists from around the world. Among the themes visitors can expect to encounter, according to a press release, are “Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language, and Storytelling.”
The new United Arab Emirates complex joins a constellation of other Guggenheim museums in New York City; Venice, Italy; and Bilbao, Spain. At almost 900,000 square feet, the Abu Dhabi location is the largest in the network, per The Art Newspaper.
The Saadiyat Cultural District, where Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is situated, is where you’ll also find the Louvre Abu Dhabi along with many other cultural institutions.
But is Abu Dhabi safe to visit?
The larger question for international tourists isn’t when the museum opens but if it’ll be safe to go there. The reignited war in Iran obviously raises concerns for anyone thinking about Middle East travel.
At the moment, international flights are still operating between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. However, on the U.S. State Department’s four-level travel advisory system, the UAE has been issued a Level 3 advisory, indicating Americans should “reconsider travel” due to the threat of “armed conflict and terrorism.”
Of course, the situation could improve or worsen by the time of the museum’s December opening. Art lovers with their hearts set on experiencing the latest Guggenheim outpost should monitor breaking events, be prepared to adjust or cancel plans if need be, and definitely get travel insurance.
