Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, welcomed their fourth child on Sunday.

Alec Neel Vance was born on Sunday morning, the Vances announced in a post on social media on Sunday evening.

“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” they wrote in a post that they signed together.

The post thanked the staff at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit.

The Vances met at Yale Law School in 2010 and were married in Kentucky four years later. In addition to their son Alec, the couple has three young children: two sons, Ewan and Vivek, and a daughter, Mirabel.

Alec’s birth is the first known time in modern U.S. history that a sitting second lady has given birth while her husband is in office.

The White House congratulated the Vances in a post on social media.

The Vances had announced in a joint statement in January that they were expecting their fourth child.

Ms. Vance said at the Republican National Convention in 2024 that her husband’s “one overriding ambition” was “to become a husband and a father and to build the kind of tight-knit family that he had longed for as a child.”

The Vances have taken their children on official international trips, including to Good Friday services at the Vatican and to dinner in New Delhi with the prime minister of India. Ms. Vance, though, has said little about her family publicly.
