Controversial police Sergeant Fannie Nkosi appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing charges of theft, defeating the ends of justice, and possession of unlicensed ammunition and stun grenades.

His appearance followed a Thursday raid on his Pretoria residence, where police investigators apprehended him after seizing several official dockets that had been removed from police custody.

Nkosi’s path to the dock began after his high-profile involvement in the Madlanga Commission, where he transitioned from an obscure officer to a central figure in a national scandal.

His testimony, the longest in the commission’s history, detailed his role as a low-level intermediary facilitating contact between the “Big 5” cartel, senior police officials, and politicians.

In court, Nkosi cut a solitary figure, dressed in a navy blue suit and a white shirt buttoned to the neck. He maintained a stoic expression throughout the proceedings, offering no reaction as the charges were read. His attention remained fixed on Magistrate Renee Venter and his defence attorney, watching the exchange between the bench and his legal team with a steady gaze.
