Former City of Johannesburg speaker and MK Party (MKP) chief whip Colleen Makhubele has replaced politics with the airwaves.
Makhubele, who this week announced her resignation as MKP MP, was announced as a radio anchor on Power FM on Thursday.
In a statement announcing its new line-up, the radio station said Makhubele would host Power Perspective starting 1 March.
Other notable hosts joining the station include former City Press editor-in-chief Mondli Makhanya, who replaces another politician-turned-radio-host, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, as host of Power Talk; former CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Sello Hatang; and renowned actress Lerato Mvelase.
Managing director of MSG Afrika Broadcasting, the owners of Power FM, Tshifhiwa Mulaudzi, said Makhubele’s “depth in governance, public accountability, and economic policy” will do well for “rigorous national dialogue” on the radio show.
“With this line-up, we reaffirm our commitment to powerful storytelling and authoritative journalism. Power 987 continues to bring together the country’s most influential voices, ensuring our audiences have a trusted space for rigorous conversation spanning business, politics, culture and society,” said Mulaudzi.

This week, Makhubele resigned from the Jacob Zuma-led MKP in Parliament but did not provide a clear reason for the move.
Instead, she said that she had made her decision “after careful consideration” and that it was “in the best interest of the MKP caucus at this time”.
“I believe that I can better serve our country and its citizens by utilising my skills, qualifications and experience in a different capacity,” she wrote.
However, on Tuesday, Daily Sun reported that she would be joining Power FM.
In a farewell post on X to her MKP colleagues, Makhubele wrote that working with them had been a “true privilege”.
“I cannot thank you enough for the lessons learnt and friendships forged. As I move on to the next chapter of my professional life, I depart with nothing but gratitude and respect for all of you,” she wrote.
After her party, South African Rainbow Alliance, failed to make an impression at the ballot box, Makhubele joined the MKP and became an MP on 23 January 2025. By May, she was the party’s chief whip, replacing Mzwanele Manyi.
In July, when the Appropriation Bill was put to a vote in the National Assembly, she incorrectly indicated that the MKP supported the bill when, in fact, it meant not to support it.

In November 2025, she was briefly axed by the party’s parliamentary leader at the time, John Hlophe. She was replaced by Des van Rooyen.
Zuma set aside this decision just a day later, and she was reinstated. Hlophe was then suspended and removed as parliamentary leader and replaced by Van Rooyen.
In January, Makhubele was removed as the chief whip. Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi was moved from the National Council of Provinces to the National Assembly to become the new chief whip.
Makhubele was previously City of Johannesburg speaker under the Cope banner.
