The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, excessive lightning and hail in parts of the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and North West.
Impact-based warnings
Yellow Level 5 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours that will result in flooding of susceptible roads and low-lying bridges/areas, damaging winds, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail that will result in damage to infrastructure and settlements are expected over the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the northern parts of the Eastern Cape and the extreme western parts of the Free State.
Yellow Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours that will result in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements, damaging winds, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail are expected over the central parts of the Northern Cape, the north-eastern parts of the Western Cape, the southern parts of the Eastern Cape, the western interior of Free State, the extreme western parts of North West, the southern escarpment of Mpumalanga as well as most of KwaZulu-Natal, except in the north-east.
In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.
SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
