    Monday’s weather: Severe thunderstorms, rain, damaging winds expected across 5 provinces

    The South African Weather Service has warned of severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, wind and hail expected in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West and Gauteng on Monday.

    The South African Weather Service. has issued warnings of severe thunderstorms in parts of the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the North West and Gauteng with heavy downpours, hail and damaging winds which may lead to flooding and cause damage to property, infrastructure and livestock.

    Impact-based warnings:

    A Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms is expected in the eastern parts of the Free State, northern KwaZulu-Natal, and the Mpumalanga escarpment areas. These storms may cause heavy downpours, lightning, hail, and damaging winds, leading to flooding, damage to property, vehicles, and infrastructure, and risks to livelihoods and livestock.

    Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms is expected in North West (except the extreme west), western Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga Highveld (except the extreme northwest), and southern KwaZulu-Natal. These storms may cause heavy downpours, lightning, hail, and damaging winds, resulting in localised flooding and damage to settlements and infrastructure.

    Northern Cape: Morning fog along the northern parts of the coast, otherwise fine and cool to warm. Partly cloudy in the east with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme east. Coastal winds will be light to moderate south to south-easterly.

    Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Fog in places in the morning, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain. Coastal winds will be light south-westerly, becoming moderate north-easterly in the afternoon.

    Graaff-Reinet: 15°C – 25°C

    KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog patches, otherwise partly cloudy to cloudy and cool to warm with widespread showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the south. Coastal winds will be light to moderate northerly to north-westerly in the north, otherwise southerly to south-westerly, spreading northwards from mid-morning.
