Multiple deaths in Limpopo bus crash at infamous spot where previous deadly tragedy occurred

A bus has crashed in Limpopo, claiming the lives of 42 passengers who were travelling from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape to Harare in Zimbabwe.

A cross-border bus has plunged into a ditch along the N1 near Makhado, claiming multiple lives in the very spot where 42 people died in a similar accident last year.

Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Moremi Taueatsoala said emergency services were still on the scene, with concerns that some bodies were trapped inside or underneath the wreckage.

About 30 injured passengers have been transported to various hospitals for medical treatment.

The N1 remains closed, and motorists have been advised to use Nzhelele’s R523 until further notice.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The bus was travelling from Gauteng to Zimbabwe, although authorities have not confirmed whether all passengers were heading to Zimbabwe.

The previous accident at the same location in October last year involved a bus travelling from the Eastern Cape to Malawi and Zimbabwe.

    More to follow.
