Red was all over the spring 2026 runways: It appeared in the form of ankle-skimming dresses, crinkle pleated tops and light-as-a-feather leather jackets. But the standouts were the shoes — heels, flats and sneakers that ranged from oxblood to cardinal to fire engine red. The designers’ proposition seemed to be that, as the fashion world continues to break out of the earthy-tinged cocoon of quiet luxury, a red shoe is a surefire way to go bold.
Of course, this sort of move is nothing new. Since Dorothy’s adventures in Oz, glinting ruby slippers have telegraphed a plot all their own. Then there’s the red pump emoji, which, like the real thing, has become a shorthand for saucy glamour. “You could be wearing sweatpants and slip on a red Manolo and boom, ‘sex!’” says Brandon Giordano, a co-owner of the vintage store James Veloria in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood. After all, “it’s the color of passion.” And even with more casual footwear, red immediately punches up an outfit’s style quotient. “I love that a red shoe can be both a serious statement as well as a playful accent,” says the New York-based stylist Stella Greenspan. “It just depends on your mood and needs.” Take this quiz to figure out which type of red shoe best fits your personality, and to get styling and product recommendations.
