As solo travel has become more and more popular, several cruise lines have begun catering to the trend by offering cabins, activities, and lounges specifically set aside for solo passengers.
Even better, a growing number of cruise companies are forgoing the once de rigueur “single supplement” fee that charges a solo guest extra for staying in a double-occupancy room.
Now the solo cruising movement is reaching a new high-water mark: A company is setting aside an entire ship just for solo passengers.
Riviera Travel—which will launch the solo sailings in 2027 (bookings are already open)—describes its “newly reimagined” MS George Eliot as “the world’s first river cruise ship dedicated entirely to solo travelers.”
The vessel will accommodate up to 68 passengers, each of them staying in a cabin designed “for one guest only,” according to Riviera. “No sharing. No supplements.”
As USA Today points out, the ship, built in 2018, was “originally designed to carry 140 passengers, so guests will have ample space in double cabins, most of which have a French balcony.”
For opportunities to connect with other passengers, there will be onboard dining, get-togethers, entertainment, and activities.
As for itineraries, the ship will travel along the Danube, Rhine, and Moselle rivers in Europe for 7-day sailings starting in June 2027. Depending on the route, there are stops along the way in Hungary, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and France. Prices start around $3,000.
Up to now, Riviera Travel has offered some limited solo cruises, but not during peak season and not on a ship solely intended for that purpose.
The company presented the move as a response to customer demand.
