Stabbing at march over ‘Nigerian king’ coronation sparks unrest in Eastern Cape city

A march over the coronation of a “Nigerian king” turned chaotic in KuGompo City (formerly East London) after a man was stabbed.

What started off as a peaceful march in KuGompo City (formerly East London) over the claimed coronation of a “Nigerian king”, turned violent after a man was stabbed.

On Monday morning, residents led by organisation March and March and various political parties, marched from the KuGompo City (formerly East London) beachfront to the City Hall.

The march was held after claims emerged of the coronation of the “Nigerian king”, which is considered to undermine the country’s recognised traditional leadership system.

Chaos erupted just as stakeholders were about to address the marchers when the man reported that he had been stabbed, allegedly by foreign nationals, in Buffalo Street.

His back was wounded and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Marchers left the gathering in front of the City Hall and headed to an outlet in Buffalo Street where the man had reportedly been stabbed.

Several stores were stoned, and vehicles were torched during the chaos.

Several shops in Oxford and Buffalo streets closed due to looting and damage fears.

Police in two Nyala vehicles and several bakkies tried to restore calm as the people ran amok.

    This is a developing story.
