Thursday’s weather: Flood risk in 3 provinces as thunderstorms persist, hot in KZN

Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, which may result in floods, are expected in parts of the Northern Cape, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Those in the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal may also expect extremely uncomfortable conditions due to heat.

    Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms associated with heavy downpours that may result in localised flooding of low-lying areas, susceptible roads and bridges, as well as localised damage to infrastructure, property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock are expected over the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern and central parts of the Northern Cape, as well as the southern parts of the Free State.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
