Tuesday’s weather: Cold snap expected across SA with some areas dropping to near-freezing

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple yellow level warnings for damaging winds and waves along the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coastline, while very cold conditions are expected over the northern interior of the Eastern Cape.

Coastal residents and mariners are urged to exercise caution due to the strong winds and high waves. Small vessels should avoid going out to sea, and beachfront activities may be disrupted along the affected coastline.

Very cold temperatures are expected across much of the country, with parts of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Free State dropping to near-freezing conditions.

    Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 2 warning: Damaging winds resulting in localised damage to settlements and temporary structures, localised disruption to power and communications, as well as disruptions of beach and port activity are expected in places along the coast between East London to Port Edward.

Yellow Level 2 warning: Damaging waves resulting in localised difficulty in navigation of small boats, with a risk of some vessels taking on water and capsizing, are expected in places along the coast between Tsitsikamma and Port Edward.

Yellow Level 1 warning: Damaging winds and waves resulting in localised disruption of small harbours and/or a port for a short period of time, small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing, and difficulty in navigation are expected between Port Edward and Kosi Bay.

Very cold conditions are expected over the northern interior of the Eastern Cape.

In the SAWS colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.
